Book club, and the next book is...

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

This book won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, and has been a big influence on many other writers and people. Please don't be tempted to wikipedia it or otherwise ruin the story for yourselves. Enjoy :)

I was going to recommend The Gunslinger, but it can be a little dry, plus you'd have to read the 6 novels that followed on from it (maybe next time :)

i'm nearly there .. I had a little break to read On Chesil Beach ... what a pair of numpties in that 'book'

I was disappionted with that - a rambling, vapid, dither from a great author.

and hardly really a novel ... just a short story about two people who need a good slap

I hated this book, i knew i would 'cos i hated the cover and sometimes you are right to judge a book by its cover.

The only decent character in the whole damn thing was the dog.

The situations were ridiculous, unbelievable and written for 'comedic effect' (comedy must be different in Kiev) and the people so unbelievably stupid /naive (depending on your view point) as to render the whole thing annoying because it's so far fetched.

if someone who wasn't from ukrainian descent wrote it the literary rascist police would be after them.

It was predictable, full of itself and smug. though i have to admit she can write descriptive scenes but most of the time i just thought get on with it.

*spoiler* oh and the real kick in the teeth is it's a love story! they dont' tell you that on the cover *spoiler*

avoid this book if you are male or intelligent or both, i tried to pass it over to my mum (who reads all kinds of crap) this weekend and she left it behind!

i'd give it (a generous) 3/10 'cos i liked Dog. she should write more in the style of Dog

Oh now you tell me! It's a bestseller, it MUST be a good book :P

I hate not finishing books too, I think I have only given up on three that I can remember - God of Small Things, White Teeth and maybe one other, all "multicultural" books that got a lot of praise, but were seriously boring! I dare not read Brick Lane , it would prob give the same result.

I was entertained by it so I'd give it maybe a 6.

I thought it was a bit patronising to it's subjects particularly the innocent african boy. I suspect this woman has a healthy hatred of her country and it's inhabitants and she doesn't think much of us either!

Still I took it as a sort of modern day Carry On film where they are all larger than life with heart-of-gold but bumbling goodies and boo-hiss-able baddies.

And you're right Dog was a great idea
