I apologise for posting this on what is essentially a mens forum but I need help and weightloss fora aimed at females are just so lame, at least the ones I found.

My problem is that I have rarely been overweight in my life but have gained an enormous 2 stone in under a year despite having no remarkable changes in my habits and lifestyle. I'm 43 years old, 5'2" with a small frame and a BMI of 25.76 (according to Wii Fit although it measured my BMI at 25.72 half an hour ago!) In the past week I have reduced my calorie intake (moderately) and upped my activity levels (considerably) working on trying to burn off more calories than I intake. I have managed to gain a lb in weight through my efforts and feel incredibly despondent at the moment. I was hoping for some advice from members on what I may be doing wrong. My daily exercise routine has consisted of approx 20 mins yoga and 20 mins aerobic and muscle exercise mix (not on Wii Fit BTW) I've also increased general physical activity, jogging etc. Any ideas how I might get trim in short order? Please don't say go join Tesco Diets! I don't have any pics at the moment but shall try to upload some later however my problem areas are my thighs and "muffin tops".

Thanks in advance
Sassy

Hi Sassy,

The Weight Loss Plan linked at the top of this forum is a good place to start. I'm sure I've read that it's OK for ladies as well, though I'm no expert (being a lardarse who's just started on it).

Anyway, welcome. Hope you find what you're looking for.

The weight loss plan's a good start! It's weight training though but won't make you 'bulky'! Plus check out some of PJ's threads for food ideas!

Hi Sassy.

1. Eat less calories. 1400 a day spread across 5 meals to stop yourself getting hungry. Good food too... a McDonalds burger does not count as good food.

2. Drink lot's of chilled water. Start with as much as you can over the day (add low sugar squash for flavour if needed). This will burn calories in the warming process, make you naturally more hydrated and more healthy and also make you feel full. Lot's of people mistake thirst as hunger.

3. Execise every other day with weights. Do it for 40 minutes and do it properly. Take 3 seconds to lift the weight and 3 seconds to lower the weight. Do a full body routine of 10 sets repreated twice. Start with the biggest muscles (thighs) and work to the smallest (possibly biceps) as this will allow the largest work to be done when you have the most energy.

4. Cut out alcohol and treats. No chocolate, buscuits, crisps etc,.

Follow these steps and you will lose the 2 stone in 3 months.

(I just did)

Welcome Sassy cat! I’m female too.

I don’t think anyone would recommend Tesco diets. Except Tesco.

I’d really recommend Anthony’s weight loss plan. I did it last year and lost 18lbs, and it’s stayed off too. Do you have gym membership?

Why don’t you log your stats? Get a tape measure and measure your vital areas:

Height
Weight
Chest
Top of arm
Waist (at your navel)
Waist (at the slimmest part)
Hips
Thigh
Calf

This is the best way of monitoring your progress, because you can see the inches falling off.

The key thing is your diet. You need to reduce your calorie intake. Do you know how many calories you are currently eating a day?

Thanks all for the advice :o) It's so easy for me to lose motivation when things do go as planned so I shall read up on your suggestions. Thank you Barcode for the tips, reading over your list I would say that my usual daily 1 pint after work, although not excessive probably has a lot to do with my failure. I suppose I tend to do a small and healthy breakfast or lunch but skip the other then in the evening go for a pint and eat a normal sized portion of whatever I'm making for the family, which is usually quite calorific. I suppose it's because I'm a halfway decent cook and tend to use a lot of cheese/cream etc. I'm glad you suggested exercises with weights as I don't do aerobic very well being a smoker (I decided not to take the Champix).

Cheers all, thanks for helping me get back my motivation :D

PS Just noticed I never put my weight into the opening post, it's 10st but I have almost always been 8st.... big jump in less than a year!

How tall are you Sass?

Here's the link to the weight loss plan (I'd recommend going with the 'starter' version - that's what I did). It sounds like calories are definitely your problem if you are cooking with cream and butter etc.

PJ is the resident Mansized chef, she might be able to give you slightly lower calorie versions of your meals!

Theres a few of us ladies on here.. so its not exclusively a mans site - i agree - the women specific ones tend to be very wishy washy... and thats not what we want is it! I have to agree with the above - have a read through some posts here and you'll get great advise - and Anthony's training plans work a treat.. your in good hands! Good Luck!!

Good advice above, but do bare in mind women generally don't lose fat as quick as men having various hormone fluctuations throughout the month, so take the prediction that rounded it off with a pinch of salt. Whearas men can lose weight at a fairly consistant rate if they're consistant in their eating, etc. womens weight loss tends to be less linear.

However, stick to the program and don't deviate for a god 3 months and you will make significant progress as the ladies on the board will attest to, as well as provide help and motivation no doubt.

Good Luck!

Anthony
