A number four all over is a bit long, I think. Depending on how thick your hair is, a number 2 or 3 looks good, IMO.

Number 1 is like scalp showing, and then two is probably a coverage of hair so you can't see through to your head. I would say three is when you can deffo see hair, rather than stubble, if you're with me?!

I guess the tihing that puts me off is I am scared of what my hairline might look like :-/
I'm not so worried about that, although I am receeding slightly, its just that I have bigger then average ears. Afraid that they'll look bigger with really short hair. Although, they looked fine when I had grade four and grade seven last year, so...
