Susan Tomes: There's no point treating classical music as if it's trivial, jokey, and easy - playing to a high standard is serious work

That headline doesn't reflect the main thrust of the article though.

Don't know if anyone else watched the programme but the coverage was absolutely awful. They basically reworked the format to make it like the X factor/pop idol etc and it was just cringeworthy and really tough on the players.

I don't care if it sounds elitist, the Young Musician of the Year is just nothing like Pop Idol. It's always been a serious competition and you would not treat other classical musicians like that, so why subject these performers to the same circus that accompanies pop music?

It doesn't make the programme more accessible either. If you're not into classical music, then Gethin Jones interviewing a 12-year-old trombonist's parents isn't going to make you interested. It's not like these kids are playing popular classics either: they are playing music by Ibert and Torke (who????).

Producers are such muppets sometimes.

there were loads of complaints on Points of View. apparently one of the programmes contained about 5 minutes of music, the rest was taken up with inane interviews with the contestants and families

I must admit I have been neglecting it over the last few years and have seen none of qualifying rounds this year. However, as I was home alone at the weekend I noticed that the "final" was on Sunday night and duly tuned in. It wasn't the real final. The good old fashioned-style final with full orchestra and concerto had taken place the previous night. I am not sure what the purpose of Sunday night was. I got so fed up I stopped watching and still don't know who won!

Why does every producer have to dumb down television to the lowest common denominator?

People don't like science, classical music and wine anymore.

They like astrology, Girls Aloud and blue WKD.

I agree that it is very sad but television producers are using drastic measures.
