i'm ususally large in branded stuff for a snug fit. I have needed XL in some brands though.

Urgh, tell me about it! In some shops medium is far too big for me, in others it can be ok and others it's just right. Trousers are often a nightmare to get the right size.
In USA, they had seven sizes at least, from xtra small to XXXL, which they renamed "husky."

Most of my t-shirts/hoodies/jumpers are smalls now when I've been wearing medium for as long as I can remember!!!
Trousers/jeans are a nightmare! I've got waist sizes from 28" to 34" but length seems to be fairly consistent.
