I have had 4 businesses - first one was when I was 23. 3 worked, 1 failed. I'm a startup junky. These days I work for someone else but its a very entreprenurial company (also a start up) and if I dont sell i dont get paid. I realised early on that I just wasnt cut out for the usual corporate world, office politics, people telling me what to do etc.

What were your businesses in? Why didn't you pursue it?
Our goal was to sell the business and the house in 2 years time and move to warmer climes.... hopefully the downturn in the housing market and credit crunch won't put us out of business but given the current state of things I reckon we'd be best making that 3 years at least.

The first was a small business in the fashion industry. i sold it to an employee because I wanted go make some money in property. The next one was a sponsorship marketing consultancy - sold when I moved country. The next was another BD consulting company that I sold because the market changed. (dot com crash) still came out of it ok though. The 4th was ok for a couple of years but wasnt going anywhere so I binned it. (that was my failed one)
Its not quite as easy as that financial committments etc..
I want to do something in my spare time then leave when the time is right.
I hate work :(
I know what you mean, it was difficult enough leaving in the first place without having experience. It was made easier by having a good relationship with your clients (who was getting fed up with the MD) and building up contacts in the industry.
Is your current work not challenging enough or...?

It probably isnt challenging enough.
I am also sick of the whole corporate crap, I dont want to slog my guts out for the benefit of the share holders or whoever. I also dont want to work for the next 35 years or whatever. I am 32 this year. I want to be retired in my early 40s. I am not going to achieve that working for some else, as a contractor (unless I am extremely frugal) or as a permie.
I think I have a chance of retiring youngish if I do stuff for myself in my own time. Maybe not a huge chance, but more of a chance then doing diddly squat.
