Talk / Life / Work / Punching above your weight - applying for jobs

I've seen a job that looks really fantastic. But the salary offered is more than double what I am on now.

Has anyone ever applied for something that seemed a bit out of their reach? Did it pay off?

Should I just go for it?

Yes, when I graduated I applied for lots of research jobs. I got several interviews but never got the job, prob because I just didn't have enough experience.

Go for it - what do you have to lose? Never mind the salary, can you realistically do what they are asking, do you have the skills advertised?

Absolutely, if you have the confidence and skills to do the job then why shouldn't they employ you? Go for it.

I have aimed much higher and much lower on occasions and find that actually going for a job with a lower salary than you're on is even more difficult than higher . They always seem to have a nagging doubt that you won't stay because you'll want more money once you've joined, so you rarely get past first base.

I have aimed much higher (25-30% more), including where I am now so yes, it's paid off.

You've nothing to lose by trying anyway.

I used to see jobs that i thought i could do until i saw the salary. thinking oh you really need to be really good, so never went for it.

But over the years in IT i've realised that alot of people in high paid jobs dont necessary know there stuff and wing it.

Go for it, wish i did alot sooner.

Without doubt! I always advise people to apply for jobs, you should never doubt yourself! My biggest wage rises came through moving jobs, everytime I was wary as the rise was significant, could I do it, and everytime it has worked out. Go for it! I have faith that you can do your job.

I think your spot on there.
However, you have to be careful you dont have someone like me working for you, and making your life and absolute misery :)

I am in a similar, yet different situation to PGE.
I am paid over what I should be in the local job market, so even moving for a paycut I think any potential employers would be expecting me to bring more to the table (I would only move for their maximum range).

I always prefer to be totally confident in my abilities for any job I go for. I dont want to disappoint anyone. However, I consider myself smart when it comes to my job, and will learn/analyse and pick up most things quickly.
