Hello,

Just wondering about morning workouts and eating beforehand. Currently my only free time is an hour or so after I wake up so have been having a bowl of oats, with milk/honey and then working out an hour later. Is this ok? Should I be having less or nothing beforehand and waiting till afterwards? Or is there a more beneficial thing to be doing in this scenario?

I know that there are worse ways I could be doing it and that working out is generally a good thing however you look at it but would like some views!

Thanks

depends, i couldn't work out if i hadn't eaten, others swear by it. As long as you aren't gorging yourself on a huge fry up you should be fine

Yep thats what I was figuring - its 350 calories followed by a black coffee and then the workout an hour later. Was more concerned if this is enough time or whether it just doesnt matter.

An hour should be fine, you should find it's settled by the time you work out. If it hasn't I'd give it another half an hour

There's nothing wrong with working out in the morning at all - I sometimes prefer it because the gym's quieter and cooler first thing.

You should definitely eat something before you go training - even if it's just a banana and a glass of milk - as you probably haven't eaten in over 8 hours so will need some fuel to help make your workouts more productive.

The only other thing is if you're going to be doing any weights that act on your spine, e.g. squats, deadlifts etc. While you sleep, the muscles and ligaments in your spine relax so when you wake up, your back is slightly weaker which puts you at a higher risk of injury. Make sure you've been up for at least an hour before you start throwing anything heavy around.

Not to mention the importance of a good warm-up with stretches

I used to always work out in the morning, and its good.
I used to just have a banana 20 mins or so before hitting the gym.
Never really had any negative benefits, and I dont do any stretches neither.

However, I do feel I can give more in the evening. Dont know if its just being more awake, or having more energy/time or what.

But , it does set you up for the day.

If I workout on a Sunday it's normally in the morning, I have my porridge about an hour/ hour & & half before hand, this past Sunday I had a belting workout. I quite enjoy going to the gym of a morning, it just KO's me for the rest of the day :S
