The article

It says that people with a certain gene linked to obesity eat more on average than those that don’t have the gene. The people they studied were from a wide range of body masses:

"The volunteers were a normal cross section of the UK population aged between 21 and 60 - 20% of them were obese and 34% were overweight."

"They found that people with the variant of the FTO gene, on average, ate between 120 and 290 calories per day more than those who did not have the 'at risk' variant."

I've got the fat gene - If I'm sat in a room with a bowl of crisps/ sweets/ biscuits etc I can't stop thinking about them & could easily pick at them until I've eaten the lot. Wheras most of the other people in the room woudn't even notice the bowl of goodies ie they don't have the fat gene :)

Maybe so :( I'm sure the other guys in the room like crap though but can leave it alone easier than me. Some of my freinds keep chocolate in the fridge untouched for weeks, if I had a bar in the fridge I couldn't stop thinking about it

I had a bar of snickers in front of my keyboard for almost 7 weeks - if you are busy thinking about something else (e.g. work!) or your stomach is full from lunch, then the bar stays there.

:D

I can leave it - it just drives me nutter

At a pal's over the weekend, he cracked open a packet of cookies & left them on the coffee table, everyone dived in & took a few, I left them well alone but couldn't stop thinking about them - there were a dozen left on the table all night & no one touched them, didn't even look at them. If I was naughty I could easilly just polish them off

There are undoubtedly genetic reasons for the way people react differently to food. Some people will be more inclined to store fat, lose muscle, or be less able to react to being full. Some people are more vulnerable to becoming addicted to food.

Tough. It isn't an excuse. It won't take long for you to realise that you are one of these people and need to alter your eating and exercise habits to compensate. If you don't know what healthy foods are, go and consult a nutritionist.

It has to be genetic.

I dated a girl once who was 5'7'' and 7st. She ate more junk than I did and she never gained a single pound in the 5 months I dated her. Never exercised. She had a sixpack fer cryin' out loud.
