... not a little balsa version of our UberMeister but an actual will for when you pop your clogs.

I was just watching a little programme this morning and they had a bit about an old gent who died recently and he had savings of over 1 million quid. He had no apparent heirs and no will so the Government was able to take the whole lot.

This guy had been a well-decorated war hero and they weren't even going to use some of the money to give him a decent burial. They just wanted to stick him in a paupers grave.

His neighbours in the end got together and paid for a modest, decent funeral and the Government made off with the millions.

Bastards.

anyway, get your will sorted out or they'll take everything you own

I don't own much to bother with that.

I thought if there is no will, it just goes to the next of kin anyway?

Thats pretty shocking!

I actually don't have one, with regards to any money I have, but I have ones (if you like) with regards to property I own, these fall under a seperate contract, unless otherwise stated in a will, but I will need to make one! Tbh though I ain't fussed at this stage if it goes to my NOK, as this is prob who would be put down in the will.

not necessarily.

and it takes months for everything to be sorted out. your next of kin will be left with paperwork and lots of legal wrangling at a time when they least need it.

When my dad had a heart attack in 2006, I gently harrassed him to sort out his will and funeral arrangements sorted out. It's done now, but he wouldn't tell me what he wrote in it...

and even if descendants do get your stuff, chances are the Government can help themselves to a larger slice than if you make the will depending on the size of the estate. My Dad's reflected circumstances from 30 years ago which never arose and so we had hassle getting the final amount processed through to Mum (and this was basically no money at all compared to that guy's million - in fact, it paid off his funeral and that was it).

I did buy a DIY kit but have no idea of the solicitor's fee to make it official, or whether you even need to. The property's all I have to consider, and I suppose some possessions as well.

We have both written wills. The problem is that the breeders in our families keep on reproducing so they need updating again!

It gets expensive!
