I'm listening to Marriage of Figaro on R3 - which never fails to delight.
Although it's 18th Century, it comes up as very modern - not only with servants running the show, but the real brains of the operation is the young woman. You can see why it was seen as revolutionary.
No guns, no crashes, no explosions - but real excitement (even though I know what's coming next) and actually caring about what happens to people. How many films can you say that about?

PMSL Claudio, my knowledge of opera comes from Malcolm McLarens "Fans" album and old Looney Tunes... usually involving Bugs and Elmer Fudd. Not ashamed to admit my ignorance... embarrassed, but not ashamed :o)

I've known more than one person go to Marriage of Figaro expecting to hear it. It is the same character though.

Yes, most of the opera is one-off.

I think it is due more to copyright reasons than underfunding of Radio services, but tiz a crying shame you can download the entire Big Brother collection but not an opera.

Aren't there 3 "Figaro" operas? Barber, Marriage and another?
