I know nothing about HR issues and stuff, but I don’t think they can count the first meeting/discussion as a warning if it wasn’t documented. It’s just your word against theirs for heaven’s sake! Any discussions about performance should be documented on your personnel file.
What are your team saying you’ve done/complained about? Are your new targets/actions achievable or not? If not then it sounds like your manager might just want you out.
If I was you Apple I’d re-do my CV for temping jobs, particularly highlighting all your 'temp worthy' skills, and get it out to agencies asap.
Have a chat with a few of them and find out a) how quickly they would be able to get you work and b) how much you’d be likely to earn. If it’s enough to cover what you need financially I’d hand in your notice. Are you on a months notice?
They didn't document the meeting in which I apparently received my first warning but the one I just went to has been documented.
I'm not just going to walk out- but don't see much point in fighting their decisions at this stage. I just know now I don't want to work for a company like this for the pay I am on.
Regarding the business idea- I've ran it by some close people including my parents who own their own business so not new to the concept and they think it sounds good.
One thing I need to check is- 'employee raiding' (i.e stealing business concept and contacts for my own business) if my contract doesn't have a clause in preventing this, does anyone else know of any reason it would be illegal?
cool. I suppose it depends on your relationship with the company's contacts/clients? In my previous job, I was not happy with the way the company was going (MD's fondness for liquid lunches and lack of work coming in, late salary payments, etc.) so I left to work as a freelancer. Luckily over the time, I built up good relationships with the clients who went with me (obviously I was cheaper than the company would charge but still).
Just thinking aloud....If the situation improves say next month (e.g. salary increase, relationship with boss is patched up, or whatever), would you be happy to stay?
EDIT - AH, I see this now in my Draft list (not there before)! I did press "Submit" not "Save Draft" this post yesterday.
Thanks all. When I go back in I'll get a copy of my contract, job description and their desciplinary procedure,
Dillion- If the situation improved I'd stick the job out for long enough to get my business idea off the ground. I've spoken to my parents about it and the lovely Wes and it does seem viable with the right work,
I just think life is too short to work all the time- especially for someone else.
I hate the fact the managers go on long boozy lunches, use MSN and Facebook, break the office dress code, take loads of personal calls etc. It's so hypocritical.
Apple, be very careful about taking on previous clients. You will need to look at your contract and see if there is anything about it.
In my previous position, there was nothing about taking clients of the company. This meant when people left, they did contact previous clients if relevant and this is very common in the business world.
However, there was a clause that the clients could not employ the staff unless agreed with the company. Someone had the left the company claiming he wanted to do something else, but he was head-hunted by a client and when the company found out, there was a big legal issue and they wanted about £18k as compensation.
Do be very careful, when approving previous and current clients and take note, some will not like being contacted and could pass that information on to your current employer.
