my understanding of supervisor's role is to "supervise" the person's work, e.g. make sure he does it properly and not on discipline -- obviously I could be wrong about this as I am not an expert in these matters!

A guy I used to work with (later on, I became a project manager but hated it) was always late, regularly have 3 hour liquid lunch, etc. ("I am not like you, I need be out in the bar, have a smoke as I think about work").
The final straw came when he did not deliver his work (he was a 3D graphic guy) by deadline as client was waiting for it so I confronted him about that. It involved shouting, etc.

The result? the boss sided with him as he needed a company for his liquid lunches.

Tw*ts and am glad that I left ages ago.
