HALTEMPRICE (Reuters) - Conservative politician David Davis regained his parliamentary seat on Friday in a by-election triggered when he quit last month in protest against the government's anti-terrorism laws.
A total waste of time? I don't think he got the debate he wanted and it cost the taxpayer £200k I read
Not a good move on his part, as it was easy for other parties not to contest the seat - in particular Labour. Clearly he went with the idea, with speaking to his peers, the Tories did not even approve the idea.
I think his heart was in the right place, but yes, he made a hot headed decision that basically floundered and wasted a lot of public money £100k -£200k. As someone in the Guardian pointed out, it is in fact the new member of the Lords, a former MI 5 woman, who has crushed the 42 days bill by pointing out it is a waste of time.
His resignation was more about getting publicity for David Davies than opening a civil liberties debate. He's not risking his career as he's in such a safe seat, and those that voted for him won't have voted on the civil liberties issue, they will have voted for him as a Conservative.
How much money has been wasted by Labour on stupid PC projects, NHS mismanagement and court cases against people who can't afford to pay their council taxes? Millions. £200k to highlight that we don't have the rights that this country was formed on anymore isn't a lot of money in my eyes. Sorry, I should say you don't have rights if you're white/male/tax payer/decent member of society (delete as appropriate).
