I've had two back operations (lower lumbar) 14 years ago,but the pain is still constant down my left leg.
I've tried lifting weights but the pain is unbearable. Is there any exercises i can do to help me keep myself in better shape than using weights and reducing the pain when i exercise.
To be honest mag-e, i'd go to the docs and ask why your getting pain down your left leg from a back operation. Seems a little unusual....
What type of exercises were you doing?... Do you experience pain when doing bicep curls for example, or during exercises that involve your legs...if it hurts when you use your legs, then you could prob find alternatives doing them seated, but i would still get it looked at to find out why its happening and if you could be doing more harm than good.
I went 6 months ago and had a MRI and the results come back that my nerve has growed into my mucsle and the doc said that it would be almost impossible to get someone to operate on me again taking the chance i might not be able to ever walk again.
The doctor that done the two operations (i was told)should have taken the nerve out but he didn't.
I haven't exercised in years(too much pain) so i suppose im really screwed now.

?
Do you get pains when walking?.. or running?...
The pain is more when i bend over or try to pick up even a gallon of milk.I can walk but my left foot turns outward (towards the left on a clock scale of 9 o clock)which i can't walk very far maybe 1/4 mile before i need to rest.
And running would be out of the question my smoking for 43 of 47 years has destroyed my lungs.
The only exercise i can actually say i get is in the summer when i have to mow the lawn which i have to take a break every 10 minuets or so.

i might add im not on no breathing machine or medications the only prob is my blood pressure which is under control with medication.
I also had a breathing test done which had excellent results even though i smoke.
It's the pain that keeps me from any exercise. They tried me on theraphy for 2 weeks but all they had me do was lay on my back and lift my legs as far up off the table as i could,i felt it was a waste of time and wasan't acomplishing anything so i quit going.
Is there any exercises i can do to help me keep myself in better shape
From your posts, it seems like the only exercise you can do is your 1/4 mile walk and swimming (if you can swim?).
I would also say that you should go back to your doctor and restart therapy. Your problem seems to be quite serious so your therapist would have hardly started in 2 weeks. It could take months or years of therapy to help you to any great extent.
Long shot, but can you give up the ciggies?. Healthwise, i don't think it is doing you any good.
Like Ste says, I would restart the therapy. Better to stick into it for longer and get past these issues than to ponder whether or not they do work but still suffer, or effect the quality of your life.

Suppose you could be right Steven,i can't swim so theraphy might be my only option left.If my left foot didn't turn out so far i would give running a try but the pounding will only cause pain.
They stuck me on a treadmill but only lasted a short while because of the pain.
I really wish i could get back to lifting weights again, but i think them days are over.
What is really funny is my breathing test come back ok but seems ill never know how good my lungs relly are unless i can start running and exercising again.
