Massive companies like Dell and HP are cutting jobs across the board.
Employers like AIG, HBOS, travel companies all in jeopardy.
Do you reckon your job is safe?
Obviously no industry is 100% safe from whats going on.
Luckily I am in an industry that is 'relatively' safe and not heavily dependent on market forces.
Anyone out there in retail, financial, travel etc that is scared about current conditions?
Do you have a back up plan? Could you retrain or adapt to something else if you got cut?

They've just started me on a 2 year part-time teacher training course, so I'd assume it is pretty safe.

Well my funding is guaranteed over the next year. Anything beyond that depends on whether we can apply for more money for me to stay on temporarily. If I were staying in research, then it would be bad, as science research is often deprioritised if the economy goes pear shaped. Any other career, no idea.

Is Mcdonald's hiring?

Am in retail, and am not unduly worried, even tho I am new to the company and the role. It's family controlled, so the plan is long term, and we don't report to the city, so there is less likelihood of panic actions taking place.

Although, I guess you can never say never....

Swapping test tubes for caramel sundaes? I'd say you could come up with some interesting fast food concoctions :-P

I don't think it is especially at risk, but you never know.

Given I am not working in the private sector any more there is an added degree of safety, and the company I work for seems to be making money so it all seems good.

I saw some figures recently which showed a drop in consumer spending but two areas where spending had not dropped were fitness and cosmetic surgery.
We can all be poor and beautiful!
