I've been in my current job for just over two years, and the last year has been pretty grotty. Not terrible, just loads of avoidable hassle that you can't avoid. You can't void it because other people are making the decisions. Oh well!
I decided a while ago that it was time to move on. I was pretty good at getting interviews - I was in the final round for a couple, there was one I lost interest in and the got an offer. It's a bit more money, but not loads more and it is is a more expensive part of the country, although not an area that soem would describe as 'desirable'.
I'm taking the job which will cause me loads of hassle. The credit crunch will make selling the house difficult, and for a variety of reasons I can't let it out. This means I'll probably be living in a not-too-fantastic rented flat (nothing like the mansion that Ben has found himself). It will also eat into my savings a bit as I pay both mortgage and rent.
Am I bothered?
Not really. If you're unhappy with something, change it. I have a bit of money to play with, so I may as well use it to improve my life. I could wait round for something to happen but, to be honest, where does that get you.
I finish my current job at the end of next month, and then I have two weeks before I start the new job. I'll be moving south, dangerously near the capital.
It's quite odd - I spent 20+ years living and working in the same place, followed by three years in a new place, and now two years in another. At this rate, I'll be moving every couple of years. Some people think I am crazy - what about friends? Well, if you lose touch with people, you lose touch. The strong friendships stay and, to be honest, I've not really been that good at, or bothering about, putting down roots.
It feels remarkably less traumatic than my last move!
Good luck on the move,
does that make you a southern softy?
Or are you a northern numpty at heart? :)
I'm a citizen of the world - neither Northerner nor Southerner.

p.s how about your mates must be daunting going to a new area and not knowing ANYONE!
It will be the third time I've done it, so no real problem.
