Talk / Life / Rant! / Buying and owning property in turkey, what women should know!

Womenfolk of Mansized.. if you ever buy a property in turkey when in a marriage, be aware that should your husband die and the Turkish government realise, they will (and have the right) to take your property away as well as any money you have in the Turkish banking system.

The reason?

It's the law there. It's a Muslim country. You're a woman, so you're not entitled to it.

This is happening to my mum right now, she's over there battling it out with them.

Only way out is if:

The Turkish government split it out between the dead mans MALE relative, brothers first, then if anything is left, the sons. (My dads brothers never saw him and weren't even at his funeral, that would be a nice surprise for them, lump sum of circa 20 grand each from out of the blue courtesy of the Turkish government)

The father left the house in his will to either his wife, or his sons. Even then, it's debateable.

So potentially, my poor old mum could be left with nothing. And that was their nest egg, and myself and my bro's inheritance.

It's a rough deal for sure - but that was the law when the house was bought. Same for all these appartments being bought in Dubai.

Similar problems in Spain at the moment where a lot of homes are being demolished by the Spanish Government because of planning issues.

Buyer beware - as always

Turkey's not a member of the EU, so you'd struggle with that one. It's not like you could take it to the ICJ.
