I first started getting wet dreams just before I reached 16. What used to happen was I'd have an erotic dream which would involve strong sexual feelings involving a girl or sometimes a boy. I'd then get this feeling of wetting the bed but it would feel really pleasurable, where-upon I'd wake up to a sticky mess in my pyjama bottoms. I use to get them a lot between 16 - 22 I think. I still get them occasionally now, while in my 30's probably because I'm still sexually a virgin - I don't know. I quite enjoy having wet dreams although the mess afterwards is a bit of a nuisance. I know nocturnal emissions happen to release the body of excess semenal fluid but I didn't realise they still happened well into adult-hood. I don’t get them nearly as often as when I was a teenager although I still sometimes wake up with an erection if I didn’t have a wet dream. I’m just wondering how common it is for adult men to have wet dreams?
I'm the exact opposite. I think i'm odd because i've never had one, not even as a teenager. I've always put it down to discovering masturbation at a very early age though.
Hi David
we're not sure precisely how many adult men have wet dreams, but it certainly isn't uncommon.
As other posters have already stated some men never or rarely have wet dreams, some men have them very frequently. It is more common for boys entering puberty to have wet dreams and often for men who're not having sex or masturbating all that much to report wet dreams. However, sometimes men who've suddenly started having lots of sex also report them so it isn't just down to not ejaculating much.
It's completely normal to wake in the morning with an erection (also sometimes called 'morning wood') although this can also vary. Some guys wake every morning with a very big erection, others find it doesn't happen every day and some mornings you wake with a bigger erection than others. As you age you may find the strength, size and amount of these erections can be less than when you were younger. You only need to worry if you always got a good erection in the morning (or during the night) and then this stops happening over a period of time - that might be a sign of erectile problems which in turn could be a sign of circulatory problems.
So it sounds like this is simply normal for you. It probably isn't specifically linked to you being a virgin since there are also guys who are in a relationship or masturbate regularly who also do have wet dreams on occasion.
Sometimes men do worry about having wet dreams, night or morning erections or other 'willy worries' that stop them having sex with a partner - and can mean they remain a virgin longer than they would like. Hopefully that's not the case with you but if you've any questions about that or other sex issues feel free to ask away.
Thanks for your reply Dr Petra, you've provided some very helpful information. It's good to know that someone like me, a sexual virgin still, is as likely to have wet dreams at my age as someone in a sexual relationship. Also, my nocturnal emissions tend to occur maybe around waking time or maybe an hour or two beforehand.
David
Just to let everyone know I am 41 and still having wet dreams. Sometimes it is a day after I have had sex. I do think it will ever stop. It may get on your wife or girlfriends nerves they do not like to wake up wet and sticky.
I'm 28, I toss off every day and am sexually active, and I still occasionally have a wet dream. I wouldn't get stressed out about it. I used to get them a lot as a teenager. I always thought it was one of those totally natural things that your body does sometimes. Weirdly, I can never remember the dream itself when I wake up.
