I'm just curious how Employment Agencies earn their commission.
I've just had a friend who's gone for a job interview. The employment agency told her that the job paid £15k a year, but once in the interview it turns out the company are paying between £16k an £18k.
So what's the deal with that? Is it simply the agency trying to get their share? I always assumed that they were given a one off payment depending on your starting salary. i wasn't aware that they actually took part of your salary too.
If this is true, is it not a good idea to let agencies negotiate a salary on your behalf?
The people I've seen in the past generally levy a finders fee, say 10 percent. It doesn't come out of your salary - the company has to pay.
Having said that, temping agencies take money off the top of your salary when they can send you a cheque and that could be as much as one third. Never heard of them doing it to a salary though.
It's been a while since I was permie, but Will is right!
The agency will normally get paid from the company about 10 to 20% of the salary the person starts off with!!
I'm a contractor, and there's 2 way to look at how they get paid.
If I go for a job at say £40 phr, the company will pay about £45 phr and the agency will get that £5 phr, so you either think your losing, or the company is paying extra
I'm a recruitment consultant, so I have a pretty good understanding of this one.
We invoice a client a percentage of your starting salary, and with my company this is typically between 20-30% (we are the Stella Artois of recruitment - reassuringly expensive!!). This money is paid in addition to what you get paid, so it is in our best interests to get you as much as possible.

They've probably just got the salary wrong.
and I'm one of the gullible businessmen that sign the invoices :-(
