An unfinished book by JRR Tolkien has been edited into a completed work by his son for publication next year. Click for more details and share any favourite Tolkein passages.
Ah this must be related to the silmarillion presumably? Is this his son Christopher? He did a lot of good stuff, organising his father's notes into publishable material .
That should be interesting, though you have to wonder if it will have anything new in it, if the son just "edited" it.
On of my favourite things in LOTR was Gollum. When I was little I had such a pity for him as my father read these to me. Gollum finds himself trying to persuade his prosecutors that he is so wretched that he deserves pity instead of punishment. Its all just so sad, and demonstrated even further how hard Frodos life was when he had to bear the burdern of the Ring.
I doubt it could be made into a film, it prob wouldn;t work. I hated how much of the richness of the text was lost in the films.
One of my fav bits is when Frodo thinks Gollums should die, and Gandalf replies
"Deserves death? Yes, he probably does, but there are many who die who deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so hasty in dealing death." Or something to that effect.

Dont you think that Gandalf is one of the greatest charachters as well? Do you know how you form an idea of what a character looks like as you read a book? Did your "mental image" of the characters fit in with the cast of the movies at all?

Saruman was the GREATEST!!
You and your Saruman obsession!
Umm, I don't know if I had a particular image, I read it when I was 10 so that was a while ago! I had already seen the Ralph Bakshi animation before the latest films, which in some ways was better than the blockbusters IMHO.
Frodo gets v annoying after a while, he's so wise and worthy it makes me sick! At least Gandalf has a bit of a temper. Do not meddle with wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger!
