Got a pile of unwanted stuff at home? Rather than taking it down the tip, this site lets you trade it with folks living near you.

Click for more info and tell us what you think.

Heard about this site on the radio a few weeks back. Apparently it is works very well. Quite a few people were 'phoning in to talk about things they had succesfully traded. From what I can remember, people were trading some quite bizarre items ........... thinking about it, I currently have a 'pile of stuff' loitering in the Kitchen - perhaps I could trade him for a newer model.

Well, I've read the blurb and decided to give it a go. Have enrolled with my local group today - surprised at how many members it has already - so I just need to suss out how it all works. It would be a very big plus if I could work out a way to
part with bootloads of my stuff without having to take any of theirs in return! lol

I've been a member for a while, and get really frustrated by all the junk emails. !! Try www.ecyclebin.com instead, same idea but better managed.

We used Freecycle to pretty much clear my wife's dads house.

He was furious!

No - just kidding - basically everything that he didn't want, we put on Freecycle and usually within an hour or two there would be a load of people in touch. It's great for stuff that would otherwise cost you to have remove (washing machines, beds, lawnmowers...)

The only slight annoyance we had was a couple of people who were clearly car-boot traders. A lot of the people we met really needed the stuff we were giving away and I preferred that someone deserving got it, rather than someone making a profit.

Oh - and we didn't trade anything - just give away stuff.

It is good for off loading computer equipment that is still in good working order but would cost an extortionate fee for the local council to recycle it.

Can you believe that the council charges you for them to recycle your unwanted IT equipment - WTF is that all about - surely they should be encouraging us to recycle IT equipment, but this attitude just makes you want to tip it (well it's cheaper, but yes I know it's not environmentally friendly, hence Freecycle - give it a go!).

Freecycle rocks!!!

A lot will depend on your local set-up - i didn't get any junk from the one I was in (it could be worth checking your settings - you may have opted in).

Car booters can be a problem - but you can state on the ad that it is not for resale. They could be breaking the law if they resold on. Some people are not too bothered about car booters - I suppose it depends on the value of the item.

Before rabbiting on about how much Councils charge - remember it costs them money as well.

Yes Claudio, I agree, however they take cans, plastic, paper and cardboard for no nominal charge - and all this is recycled into useful products, like toilet paper and wheelie bins.

IT equipment doesn't need reprocessing - a monitor can be uplifted from one location and delivered to another all for the cost of transporting in council lorries that are never off the roads anyway.

You even get 3 free uplifts of fridges, freezers and washing machines that get tipped at the other end.

I just feel they could be doing more given the number of CRT monitors that are now undesired by IT users.
