A medieval town with some of the old city walls still standing. Has possibly one of the worst town centres in the country with the council’s favourite road sign ‘no right turn’ so you are buggered if you get in the wrong lane or miss your turning! Nightlife is pretty poor and you are better of going to Bournemouth, but if you must go out in Southampton, here are a few places I go!
Clubs
Ikon
Biggest club in Southampton, known as Pikon to the locals, full of chavs and great place to see a fight. The music isn’t too bad, mostly play chart RnB and dance with some cool dance anthems dropped in, no cutting edge stuff though. Sat nights are best, but you’ll also pay a high entry price £6.50 after 11pm and major rip off priced drinks, bottle of VK about £3.80. Open to 3am on Sat, 2am all other nights.
Diva
Joins on to Ikon and is strictly for over 25’s. Entry price is for Ikon and Diva. Plays a lot of cheesy dance music but I usually have a laugh in there. Rip off drinks and same entry price as Ikon.
Jumpin Jaks
Playing all types of music, 80’s, 90’s, dance, RnB. I had a great night in there a couple of weeks ago (could be caught doing Black Lace’s Superman…oopps!) but a big group of friends and lots of alcohol is required! As usual expect high priced drinks, the drinks are in excess of £4 after midnight. Sunday nights are good for Funky Sunday though.
Flares
Dust off your bell-bottoms and Afro wig and go in for your 70’s revival. Good laugh in there and great for birthdays, hen stag do’s etc. Expensive for drinks (isn’t everywhere in Southampton!), don’t expect much change from £10 when buying two drinks.
Bars
Hotshots
Warm up bar if your going to Jaks, Ikon or Diva. I’m starting to feel old in there, as there are plenty of young girls with hardly any clothes on. Drink prices are nice and cheap, £1.30 for a VK and £2 entry, but free if you have a cinema ticket.
Square
Very cool place when it first opened though it has gone down hill a bit. Good place to go to before flares. Try their cocktails, they are lovely! Free entry.
Yates
If you have one in your town, well there all the bloody same, except ours host all the troublemakers and under aged drinkers – you have been warned! Free entry.
Bar Risa
Cool little bar with slightly older and more sophisticated clients. Great place to start drinking if you are going to the Jongleurs comedy club upstairs (which is excellent BTW). Free entry.
Please feel free to add more, as I don’t go out where the students go and I don’t go the other side of the water (those that live there will understand!)
