Barclaycard are debt collecting a large balance from me, things have gone from bad to worse but that's not my point.

I've just had a phone call from their debt collectors, is it CSS(?), she demanded £200 on pay day at the end of the month and then to start me on a repayment plan. I told her I couldn't afford a lump sum of £200. She got very aggressive and told me that that was that and that a field agent would call at my parents where I now live, as I'm broke, and not leave till they have the money by whatever means.

I agreed she was quite welcome to have a chap come round and ask for the money but I haven't any to give and then he would be entitled to leave.

Is this normal?

Will a big, burly, macho, muscled debt collector force money or goods out of my elderly parents?

Declare yourself bankrupt. Debt collectors cannot touch you then.

They can only take what belongs to you I think.

lol, nope! What age are you? Are you over 18? I assume you are as you obviously have a Credit Card (CC) but have known people not to be! In either case the debt does not fall to your parents esp when you are over 18. The debt is yours. Then can send whoever they like round, and you don't have to let them in for a start, unless they have the required legal papers, which i doubt they will. However the long and short of it is they can only take assets which belong to you, i am guessing giving you live with your parents this won't be much!

She can't force you to pay £200 at the end of the month, i would try and come to a compromise, however they can start going down the legal route of trying to arrest wages etc, best that they don't do this, or issue a CCJ etc.

Anyway if you is being aggresive on the phone there are agencies there that will deal with such calls, on the first instance speak to her line manager and raise a complaint, yes you are in debt, but they should not treat you like scum, esp if you 'are' trying to pay it! Are you!?! ;)

bit extreme, unless the debt is massive. I don't think what the person on the phone said is right, there will be people you can call about this, but unfortunately I don't know who they might be.

Re-reading that, honestly if she is making statements like this then you really should be raising a complaint to her team leader, or an outside agency. They can't be threatening on the phone like this. Or is this a little bit of exaggeration?

Get in touch with the local Citizens Advice, they will point you in the right direction.

I’m not an expert in this area, but threatening your parents is definitely not on. Yes, you must raise a complaint. By phone and follow it up in writing keeping details of the times of the phone calls and the people you talk to. If you know when they are coming round, get an independent third party to act as your witness and if possible why not record the meeting (not covertly but openly). Work out what you can afford and be prepared to prove it to them. Hopefully they will accept that.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

It is my card and I am the sole user, I had a repayment plan but have failed to keep up.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest, I thought for one minute she had a point and I'd come home from work finding my parents in an empty house.

I don't own anything apart from the PC, XBox, telly and video. Oh and a futon and chair.

All the other companies have rearranged my repayments to a smaller amount after I became even more hard up.

No exaggeration, I've had to deal with collectors but she said they're not debt collectors but field agents when I pulled her up on it.

She said I was trying to be smart.
