wondering what the general consensus is regarding each respective martial artists qualms over their technique and ability.
Personally i am really awful at kicking, but have seen some really good improvements recently. My sparring, however, is absolutely abysmal.
My kicking is generally fine. The area I'm having most issues with at the moment is my flexibility in practice and my flexibility in memory.
As we haven't spoken before, I'm a black belt and used to be able to do the splits every which way. The problem is I had a few years out and only recently (5 months I guess) came back to Taekwondo. My body won't do the splits any more but my mind still thinks they can.
So here I am with my 3rd pulled hamstring (I did my left one in my first week back, my right one two weeks later and last week I did my right one again).
Never mind, taking it easy for a week or so then I'll ease it back in again... I'm getting quite used to minor injury rehabilitation.
Aside from that, my only issue is my weight - I'm actually happy enough with my technique.
If you want any tips at kicking, let me know in particular which ones you would like to talk about and I'll be happy to help out (however, these will be from a Taekwondoin perspective and may not match your art).
Ive been doing lau gar kung fu for about 5 months, and before that i was with a mc dojo doing 'traditional' kung fu with a sifu resting on his laurels for about 10 months. (10 wasted months)
I think im having most trouble with distinction between a roundhouse and side kick, and a lot of my frustration is related to my flexibility, or lack thereof. I'm getting better, practicing lots of the kicks from a static position at home as we dont do many high reps of a particular kick in class, and they are almost always in sets of 3 or 4. Still enjoying it though, loving it actually.
Bit worried as im off to uni in september and wont be about and was worried that there wont be any lau gar where im going. I really wanted to go down to sussex and learn white crane at the place wolfgang does but not sure i can due to it not being very high up on my choices and ive got a place at my first choice too.

In Karate there is something called the exchange position, this is the point that almost all kicks come from. It's really important that this move is correct, has it's the centre of all most all kicks!

I used to get confused about this too Cafers. My instructor gave me a private lesson on this once and made me practise the side kick with my leg on his kitchen work surface! I had to stand sideway as you're supposed to and slide my leg down the surface thus emulating the actual movement. I've been much better ever since. The work surface thing shows you that you point your arse at your opponents for a side kick - it really is from your side -and your body faces them for a roundhouse.
Sounds like rubbish how I've said it but hope it helps.
As I've said to you before, you be really welcome at our White Crane Club.....when you're a student or afterwards.
It is most definitely in the pipeline wolf, just gotta get this degree under my belt and then look for stuff down your way. Good news though in that i have found a lau gar club in Cardiff who seem to have a pretty tight schedule, they integrate more Qi Gong into their sessions and green sash and above are encouraged to learn tai chi alongside the fu. They also do private one on one sessions which is something ive been after. The guy concerned is actually a 5th dan guardian of the lau gar style so he knows what he is doing.
not sure if its better talking to you on here, where you reside, more than it is on warrior training!!!
