Voters should be made to vote at elections, two ministers will say today. It's a "civic duty, like jury service", says one. You'd also get a "vote none of the above" option. Do you agree with the plan?

Should we be forced to vote?

More people would be encouraged to vote if they ended up with honest politicians, who had genuine policies (not negative campaigning), and who were not just in it for the pension / benefits / perks / directorships that come with the job. We are stuck with this shower of incompetent idiots in power because there is no credible alternative.

It is one of the few jobs that you can succeed in without any experience, brain or common sense.

But someone once said ' in a democracy, you get the Government that you deserve'. How true.

If we were forced to vote, then we'd probably all vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party! - oh sorry, I forgot, they're already in power.

Probably going to get shouted down for this, but it's the one element of the nanny state I agree with. Just call me Lloyd George...

They should introduce it if...

- We can definitely vote "none of the above".
I reckon most people think politicians are out to line their own pockets, so the result would be interesting

- Parties are funded by taxpayers not backhanders
The bill works out at pence a day and I'm happy to pay for the reassurance that they work for us, not whoever signs off their expenses

- Some form of PR is introduced
Votes should always count for something, so I'm pro-PR even if it means the looney right get the odd candidate. Round here is touch and go so it matters, but some places are a such a shoo-in for red, blue or yellow it just isn't worth getting out of bed.

OK, off my soapbox now. What do people think?

Labour?
Tories?
Lib Dem?

What do they offer!!

Perhaps BNP need to get a few more votes, just so that it comes as a 'wakeup' call to all the other party's!

And perhaps then Lab will do something about immigration!

I agree with a lot of what Will says. I do have some sympathy for the argument that it is inherently illiberal to force people to vote.

Like some of the other people on here, my attitude is that if you can't be bothered to vote, you have no business complaining about the kind of system we have.

..one interesting point though.. what happens if voting IS compulsory, and "none of the above" wins?

wow..that's pretty "out there" as a method of promoting change.. I wonder if the German people who voted voted for the Nazi party in the 20's and 30's wondered the same?..

..anyone who votes BNP as a protest, or to give a wake up call to mainstream parties is beneath contempt... there is no excuse for voting for a nasty bunch of racist thugs... ever!
