Well our refuse collection is now fortnightly and there is limited facililites for recycling (unless you drive to the tip).

The streetlights automatically switch off at midnight in the village and we have no local police.

so on balance i would say an increase is fair, if today is national opposite of what i mean day.

LOL

Well this is fantastic news - as if I'm not skint enough already! My borough is actually ok - the streets are cleaned regularly and the recycling and refuse collections are good. I could still do without an increase! :-/

I hate how the bin men round ours, always empty the bins before putting them back right in front of my driveway hence blocking me from pulling into my drive.

A bin man is not a hard job, If you can't even do THAT right then you have no chance.

As for council tax, I don't mind paying it as long as I know the money is going to the right places. Sadly this is not always the case in some areas.

ha ha, probably. My garden looks like a tip at the moment. I can't wait for the summer to get in there and sort it out.

Same here, but we're already getting stuffed every which way. My brother moved to Holland as everything seems a lot more equitable there. I think he pays a bit more in tax but the quality of life (he tells me) is so much better. Last one out please turn off the lights

No question council tax is a rip off a goodly proportion going not to your local authority but to the County coffers (probably to pay for county councillor's pensions) but that apart it's a kin to the bus fare syndrome they keep increasing it and every time they do less and less people can afford to pay so then they incur significant extra costs to try and recover what people can't afford so they get less revenue so the next year they put it up again to try and recover the short fall...........and round and round we go......it as to come to a sticky end eventually

As a Scot, I may be betraying my country when I say that I think the Poll Tax was actually a fairer system.
Under the current system, a single person in a £250,000 house would pay more than a family of 4 in a £80,000 house. Surely the family of four would use more council services (waste collection, etc)?
Under the Poll Tax, everyone over the age of 18 in the house with a wage had to pay something.
