German cannibal awaits judgement

A verdict is expected in the re-trial of a German man who killed and ate an apparently willing victim

Armin Miewes was banged up for eight-and-a-half years in 2004 after being found guilty of the manslaughter of Bernd Juergen Brandes. But a judge ordered a retrial as he felt the punishment was too lenient.

Miewes met Bernd on the internet and it was his victim’s eagerness to be murdered and eaten (his request was captured on video) that initially spared Miewes a heavier sentence.

Prosecutors argue Miewes is likely to reoffend after he admitted fantasising about devouring the flesh of attractive young people.
