Doctors call for 'fat tax'

Delegates at the American Medical Assocation's annual conference are to demand a levy on the sweetners used in the likes of Coca Cola and Pepsi

The doctors say the money raised would be used for a huge public health education campaign.

They are also expected to call for the amount of salt in burgers and processed food to be slashed.

Some US cities and states already tax soft drinks and junk food, but spending the windfall on better diets would be a world first.

Over 30,000 Britons die from obesity related illnesses a year. Almost half of all UK men are overweight and one fifth obese.
