Sony BMG is among the labels using sophisticated software to sift music for potential hits

The program - called Platinum Blue Music Intelligence - renders tracks down into thirty components including rhythm, melody and harmony.

Nice, but you think they'd come up with a better name. Charlatan perhaps?

Boffins have found that all hits fit the same pattern irrespective of genre. Match the pattern, push the song to teeny boppers and bingo! An 80 percent chance of a hit.

According to the BBC, the system has big names behind it including Moby. But it's also attracted a fair share of naysayers.

Among them is X Factor moaner Louis Walsh. "The only technology I would use to pick a hit is my ears. I would not listen to a computer," he said.

OK, so let's test Westlife... Computer says noooo!
