Beatles suit rocks iTunes

Apple meets err... Apple in court tomorrow over claims that Steve Jobs promised to stay out of the music business

The decades long battle flared up again yesterday after Apple Corps - owned by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono - alleged that the computer firm is unfairly using the "Apple" name to sell music.

Apple Computer says that the legal music downloads business could be affected if they lose the name. The parties face off tomorrow.

“Apple [Computer] is probably going to pay to make this go away,” said one music industry pundit. Even a 50m dollar settlement would make scant difference to the Cupertino company's cash pile.

Apple Computer headed off a previous 1981 lawsuit by the Beatles with an 80,000 cheque and a promise not to sell music. Probably best not to making sweeping promises like that, eh?
